Alleppey Backwater
Alleppey's backwaters are a maze of rivers, lakes, and canals threading through Kerala's coastal plains, fed by the waters of Vembanad Lake. Palm-lined banks, paddy fields lying below sea level, and small villages accessible only by boat give the region its slow, unhurried character. Traditional kettuvallams (houseboats), canoes, and country boats have moved through these waterways for generations, once as the main means of transporting goods and people, now as the best way for visitors to experience the region up close. Whether by houseboat, canoe, or shikara, the backwaters offer a quieter side of Kerala — one shaped entirely by water.
How to explore Backwater
There's no single way to see the backwaters — each mode of travel gives you a different view of the region, and most visitors combine a couple of them during their stay.

The classic way to experience the backwaters. A kettuvallam moves slowly along the wider lakes and rivers, letting you watch village life, paddy fields, and palm groves drift by from the comfort of a private deck. Best for overnight stays, longer routes, and travelers who want to relax rather than actively paddle.

Canoes take you where houseboats can't — narrow canals, shallow backwaters, and small waterways that cut straight through village life. It's a slower, closer, more physical way to see the region, with local guidance along the way.

Similar routes to canoeing, but self-paddled and more active. A good option for travelers who want a bit of exercise alongside the scenery, and enjoy having more control over pace and direction.

A smaller, open motor or paddle boat, ideal for short cruises — sunrise, sunset, or a quick loop around the lake. Good for travelers short on time who still want to get out on the water.

Traditional, simple wooden boats used by locals for generations. Riding one gives a more authentic, unhurried feel, often used for shorter village or canal routes rather than long-distance travel.

Marie Johnson
"We booked the full-day canoeing trip and it ended up being the highlight of our whole Kerala trip. He picked the pace based on our group, made sure we didn't miss the morning ferry, and stayed in touch the entire day. Breakfast at the village home was a nice surprise too — didn't expect that level of detail."
David Lee
"Everything was arranged directly with him — no agent, no confusion. He confirmed our houseboat booking within a day, checked in with us before we arrived, and even helped us adjust our sunset timing once we got there. Felt like traveling with a friend who happened to know Alleppey really well."
Liana Chen
"We only had one morning in Alleppey and he made it count. Quick reply on WhatsApp, clear pricing upfront, and he was there to meet us at the boat himself. Would book with him again without hesitating."
